where can I find custom designed window boxes and exterior shutters?
I am looking for good quality window boxes and shutters that can be custom designed. "Easy to take care of" is a must. It is the time of the season and I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks
A finish carpenter can make you just about anything you want to design in both shutters and window boxes. Another option is to check out the woodworking department at your community college. In ours, they do exception work, charge only for the materials and take it on as a class project. I’ve seen them make everything from kitchen cabinets, to entertainment centers, to furniture, to shutters, to planter boxes. If you are looking for designs to make yourself, check out the Lowes woodworking projects and plants.They have a monthly magazine featuring such projects and you can go on line to access the archives. They even give you the materials lists.

First you need to determine the function of the desired exterior shutters. Will you need or want them to function (swing open and closed), or will you simply use them to enhance the appearance of your house. Next you need to specify the material. Wood shutters are classic and will last a long time if well maintained. Only wood shutters can be functional. Vinyl exterior shutters are not as authentic in appearance, but will be easier to maintain.
Both materials are offered in a wide range of styles including fixed louvered, raised panel, and board and batten.
If the shutters will not be functional, you will require approximate sizes that only appear to cover the window. Usually a custom exterior shutter is not required for this application. Many suppliers manufacturer shutters in full inch increments that can be trimmed to fit.
